Muscle Warfare – MMA Bodybuilding
Bodybuilding is a form of body modification involving intensive muscle hypertrophy. An individual who engages in this activity is referred to as a bodybuilder. On the other hand, mixed martial arts (MMA) is a full contact combat sport that allows a wide variety of fighting techniques and skills, from a mixture of martial arts traditions and non-traditions. An individual who engages in this activity is referred to as an MMA fighter. MMA, bodybuilding, bodybuilding, MMA… a lot of people are confused. Most people mix MMA strength training with either bodybuilding or general fitness. This is because the majority of what the average person is exposed to in weight training are these two types of training. One main difference is that in bodybuilding, the goal is to build as much symmetrical muscle mass including all of the major visible muscles in the body. In MMA strength training, the goal is to supplement the fighter’s skill and ability to perform at the highest level physically for a given time period.
In other words, if the purpose of bodybuilding is for show, the purpose of strength training is to improve strength, endurance, and technique in a fight.
But aside from the purpose, the type of training itself in each kind of activity is different. Bodybuilders are taught to perform resistance training in a way that involves muscle hypertrophy. MMA strength training, on the other hand, requires you to do resistance training exercises that will carry over to fighting, such as explosive power and muscular endurance involved in striking and grappling.
MMA is quite demanding and needs a lot of concentration and good mental toughness, as well as good conditioning. Therefore, mixed martial artists require a lot of training, or even MMA bodybuilding, in order to perfect the sport.
